1999/12th Discussion Forum

「Lighting Ecology」

Since the 6th competition, the general theme of "Lighting Ecology" has continued, with entrantsi ideas becoming more mature and established up until this 12th competition. Ideas on "Lighting Ecology" were too serious at first; but later they began to focus more on efficiency, conversation with lights, and pleasure; and now they have evolved to evoke happiness in the comfort of light. This year I also got the impressions that "lighting is capable of playing with us"; in other words, it is as if the light says " Let me entertain you".

In this year's competition, the most impressive entry for me was the bronze award-winning "Ultimate Conversation". It wastes nothing in its presentation, and its shape is extremely elegant.

I'd like to see the Japanese sensibilities brought out more in lighting design, as opposed to the current vogue that is stateless and lacking in cultural distinction. We feel that full-scale development of lighting fixture design is a problem that must be deal with in future. Because the functional or decorative role of lighting dose not produce what we know as "art".

I also agree that presentation techniques have rapidly changed in recent years. This owes much to the fact that computer graphics are highly developed and widely used. The content of many of this year's entries was admirable.

The footprints remain and fade with time. For "place", there is an element of time in its design. By adding the concept of time, a three dimensional design becomes four dimensional.

Many of the entries in this year's competition entertained and satisfied me, giving me a heart-warming impression. I also noticed that there were many innovative works of art in terms of technique and merchandise. My overall impression of the entries is that they can be divided into architectural and pieces and merchandise pieces.
