現代社会は、照明の電源を入れれば灯りが灯り、夜になれば照明をつけ、昼間でも部屋の中では照明をつけています。 このように当たり前に照明が点く事で、照明の光は無限にあると錯覚しています。 日本では膨大な電力量を様々な方法で供給しており、CO2排出量や原子力発電の安全性なども考えなくてはなりません。 当たり前のように電気を垂れ流し、電源が無限に在るかのごとく日常をもう一度見つめ直す必要があります。 節電をして、電気を使用する“時間”に着目し、“光”と“時間”を結びつけたいと思いました。 “ 時間”を計る“ 時計”を砂が減っていく様から“ 砂時計”を使用し、照明に組み込みました。
砂時計は、照明のアイコンである“電球”を使用し、砂時計を彷彿させる“ひっくり返す”動作で照明のスイッチがON になります。 電球の中のガラスの砂が照明の光を散乱させ、周囲を明るく照らし、見る人を楽しませます。 砂が落ち終わる頃に、照明の電源も消灯します。 これにより時間が経過し、それだけ照明を使用したのだと意識づける事ができ、砂が減っていく様を見る事で、資源や光の大切さを再認識してもらえる照明になっています。

Living in modern cities, we take it for granted that light is always available if we only push the button. We are under the illusion that the supply if illumination is everlasting. In Japan where vast amount of electricity is provided we have to think seriously about the CO2 emission and the safety of nuclear generation. We should reexamine our daily life where electricity is wasted as if natural resources were limitless. This self-examination led me to associate "light" with "time".
As a step to electricity saving I incorporated a sand glass with bulbs. With a simple action of turning it over my lamp is switched on. The tiny pieces of glass in the bulbs refract light and illuminate the surroundings. When the ‘sand’ has run out the lamp is switched off, leaving you aware that all the while you have been using those precious resources .
