I suppose that enlightenment means affection. Although human beings are secured by a profound affection, it is hard to see or feel this in everyday life. In this sense, our competition offers a good opportunity to find that affection and approach it.

Taoism teaches us that there is 'Tao'(:'way') in everything. Accordingly, Kendo is the 'way,' and the Tea ceremony is the 'way.' Human beings also have a variety of 'ways' within their bodies, for example, 'ways' for the blood. Finally, the light is the 'way' too. Seeking a 'way' is the fundamental rule of designing, and therefore, designing is a form of training.

When I was asked for advice on a plan for the lighting design competition for students, I was a little negative. However ten years since the competition started, my concern has now almost gone. In my opinion, entries from foreign countries have made a significant contribution to the competition, upgrading the overall quality of the competition as a result.

Looking back on the 10-year history of the competition, I see that many people have put in a lot of effort and achieved much. Among them, I am most impressed with the challenge to have introduced the concept of "Ecology," which has made the competition all the more significant and meaningful, with its positive commitment to social issues.

During the competition this time, again there were some works which were difficult to find a meaning in at first glance. However, because both we and corporations have to try and look for new meanings in things which may seem to be meaningless, we should always remain sincere and endeavor to carry on in our duty.

One of the few things which can still make us feel a sense of magical power is lighting. Almost everything else in our lives is becoming materialistic. I hope the young generation can give birth to a creation which would express heavenly powers and the greatest powers of nature, by means of technology.
