Head Juror

(Industrial Designer)
The grasp that students have on our current age is both impressive and interesting. I think this competition revealed the anti-elitist side of students. In the competitions up until now, there has been a sense of tragedy. "we'll be in trouble if we don't do this" or "if we don't do this there are going to be mistakes" or "lets fix up this". There was a strong sense of society in that the students thought hard and long about society or there was the theme of assisting personal hardship. Although I think these ideas are an important part of the Koizumi Competition, there are cracks opening from this wall and an element of comedy is emerging. Comical elements are certainly part of what is possible from light. I think that students are beginning to explore this field more.

The Japanese term "akari", which we are thinking of in Japanese does not directly coincide with the international word "lighting". The difference being that "lighting" does not have both the meaning of "light" and "lighting" as the Japanese term "akari" does. When judging the entries as a jury panelist, this difference occurred to me.

Kiyonori Kikutake
( Architect)
I think it was very stimulating to hear the opinions of our fellow jury panelists from America and Italy. I think the entrants in this competition have also felt the effect of their presence. There was an immense variation between the different works and I actually felt this competition was characterized by sensuous images and a richness of form.

Shoei Yoh
(Architect)
Ever since Edison created the light bulb, the natural phenomena of light and lighting has found physical form. This year's competition compelled me to question if this physical form of light is chemical, or biological. When we are faced with this question, we return to Edison. We return to Fleming's rule, but today's student's take a different perspective. It was being thrust into this new dimensional perspective that moved me today.

Patrick Whitney
(Designer)
I think that some works ignored the theme. I felt much interest towards work that developed in parallel with the theme. In particular there were many works that successfully employed electricity generated by nature and I think these works are environmentally beneficial. Especially for poor regions and regions that cannot rely on existing electricity grids, there is much benefit to be gained from generating electricity from nature. The benefits are not limited to sustainability of the environment, but also the sustainability of the society.

Angelo Cortesi
(Industrial Designer)
Çshe students are taking the lead in intensity of feeling alone. Although we can understand the content of the written compositions, I get the impression that these concepts are not being fully realized in the design. However the work of a designer is to take risks and have the courage to undertake new things and an attitude to take up the challenge of new things is a splendid thing.
