今回は、「災害時のあかり」というテーマに即して、作品は例年よりコンパクトなものが多いように感じます。これも学生の皆さんがテーマをよく検討されてデザインされているからではないか、と思います。 災害を考えた上で都市計画やそのあかりをとらえるとまったく違った風景が立ち現れてくると思います。その兆しが感じられました。全体的に21世紀の風景のある作品が多かったと思います。

今回は災害にしぼったことで学生から提案された内容も、それぞれよい提起だったと思います。しかし、審査する私たちには災害の十分な経験があるわけではなく、その点が紛糾のもとになったようにも思います。ほとんどの作品で使われていたLEDのような新しい技術は、どうやって社会の中に入り、浸透していくのかこれからのテーマであると感じました。
★葉 祥栄

今回の課題は単なるデザインではなく人を思いやる心の問題を示していて、教育的であり、世界中の学生に共感してもらえたのではないかと思います。水が多くの共感を得ていて、ペットボトルに関する作品の応募が多くありました。水で乾きを癒して命を永らえ、非常に省電力の小さな電池で光を生み、光で心を満たすアナロジーは素晴らしいものだと思います。
災害に対して光が救いになるのは素晴らしいことだ
と思います。栄久庵さんはよく「光は命である」とおっしゃっていますが、光と命が等価になっていた第19回のコンペだったと思います。

今は変に聞こえるかもしれない、おかしいと思われるアイデアも、近い将来には可能になっているかもしれません。今年の学生の作品は特に多様性があり、アイデアがより洗練されてきていると感じました。年々技術も向上しているのだと思いました。

今回の作品では、今まで考えたこともなかったジッパーのようなファッション界の製品にもあかりが簡単にとりつけられるようになっていました。あらゆるモノと照明が融合する時代がきたのですから、私たちは、将来照明について戦略的考察を余儀なくされるだろうと思います。今回の作品を造った学生たちは大変頭が柔らかく、これまでで初めて若い学生たちのフレッシュなセンスにねたみすら感じました。

I notice that this year, in addressing the theme of "Lighting for Disasters”, there was an unusually large number of competition works of a compact nature. I got the impression that the students of this competition founded their designs upon a strong examination of the theme.
In thinking about urban planning and its light, I think the flavor of the design would be completely different if you incorporated consideration of disasters. Overall, I thought so many of the works had a 21st century flavor.

I really think that choosing disasters as the theme was timely. I also thought the various content submitted by the students raised excellent issues. However, I felt that we as judges did not really have sufficient experience in disasters, which made judging more complicated. Most of the works used new technology such as LED, and I thought the next theme could deal with how these technologies can be introduced into society and become commonly used.

Well I actually think there was common sentiment shared amongst students from around the world in this competition. It offered a rare opportunity for students to view design from a standpoint of sympathy. I think that this year's task required more than simple design, it was a problem related to having sympathy and concern for others and I think the challenge had educational merit as well. Many students shared the same sentiment regarding the importance of water and produced work relating to the PET bottle. I think that it is a wonderful analogy to use water to quench thirst and prolong life, get abundant light from small batteries with very energy efficient electric power and satisfy the spirit with light. I think that it is wonderful that light can have a rescuing function in such circumstances. Mr. Ekuan says so often that "light is life", and in this 19th competition we have had the opportunity to consider the parity between light and life.

Weird ideas that sound strange now, may be possible in the not-too-distant future. This year I felt that the works were multifaceted and the ideas were fresher. I thought that each year technology also is improving.

This year's works have demonstrated how easy it is now to attach lighting to fashion products such as zips, in ways that haven't been thought of before. As we have now entered an age where lighting is being fused with just about anything, I think it is unavoidable that we give some strategic thought to future lighting. The students who submitted work this year appeared to be immensely flexible in their ideas and I even felt jealous for the first time of these young students'
