第21回 審査員講評 2008/21st Discussion Forum |

Head Juror Kenji Ekuan (Industrial Designer) I think that the confusion caused by the new age has appeared for the first time in this competition. It seems that the applicants straightforwardly worked on the central theme of energy conservation and ways to handle light, but I think that there still is a long way to go. This time signs of efforts to work on the theme have been observed, so it will grow in the future. I feel a little frustrated, but I think that I need to face the present situation. There has not been much dynamic development. There have been only ideas, and they will be developed in the future. I believe that to connect them well should be our basic attitude as people leading students. Jury Panel Kiyonori Kikutake ( Architect) I think that the theme of this time that focuses on environmental problems is timely. I evaluate the works from the viewpoint of technical advancement. Radical change is beginning to take place in the world of lighting too. I believe that this competition plays an important role because the students have studied hard and have directly experienced innovation in the world of lighting, and the best selection committee has expressed opinions about their works. I believe that to disclose the contents of the selection and the opinions by juries will have a great influence on the world. Shoei Yoh (Architect,Designer) Selecting studentsÅf works is always an encouragement to me. In my work, I inevitably give productivity, economic efficiency and convenience top priority. On the other hand, it is very important for students to learn technical knowledge, choose an appropriate light source and know how to control it. This time we discussed the fact that the Japanese style dim light such as glow of a firefly and light from snow through the window is not global. I sincerely hope that everyone has the understanding and the tolerance towards other cultures. Patrick Whitney (Designer) Looking back on the selection, I think only about half of the pieces come up to the theme. On the other hand, some works pursue something simpler, and I think it is a good tendency. Although students tend to produce complex designs, it is important for them to consider how to create a larger number of things with a smaller number of materials. I want them to think more about designs rather than to pursue showiness in the future. Angelo Cortesi (Industrial Designer) What is regrettable in this year's competition is that there are no works with excellent design in the real sense of artwork. The students focused on ideas and philosophies, and there is no piece whose light source was assembled in advance and the design perfected later. The idea behind "light & light/ light and light, and their way" is interesting, but that is all. Its design is not new. Also, the idea of "Sun-Light Peg" is humorous, but it is not a work of design. I fear that the act of designing objects is being forgotten. Paradoxically, if I were to choose the works that emphasize design, they would be" The precious light in my Pocket" and "ARBRE". I can find an emphasis on a design that considers functions and shapes only in these two works. Umbert Donati (Director, Italian Institute of Culture) Special Jury Panelist Mr.Cortesi and I have agreed that Italy Encouraging Award will be awarded to the humorous "Bulled" that uses a LED within a light bulb. I think it conveys a message because it uses LED as the light bulb that is familiar to everyone and it arouses new interest. When the light bulb has burnt out, all you have to do is to change LED. It is simple, and I like it. |
