『Binchoutan Light』

I think that the confusion caused by the new age has appeared for the first time in this competition. It seems that the applicants straightforwardly worked on the central theme of energy conservation and ways to handle light, but I think that there still is a long way to go. This time signs of efforts to work on the theme have been observed, so it will grow in the future. I feel a little frustrated, but I think that I need to face the present situation. There has not been much dynamic development. There have been only ideas, and they will be developed in the future. I believe that to connect them well should be our basic attitude as people leading students.

I think that students are getting better at design with themes of light related social issues. From now on, I’d like them to think about the methodological aspect of design. I think this year’s competition was a success in a sense that we could discuss
the contribution of this event in both the Japanese and global environmental issues equally. I also had an impression that most of the works were very romantic.

Shoei Yoh
(Architect,Designer)
I feel that this year, we have many works that havea nostalgic feeling similar to “Edison’s Exuviae” which, back then reminded me of the 8th golden award winner bulb-shaped spirit lamp.
I would like the participants to learn about the past award winners. In lighting equipment, there’s actually more energy consumed to create heat than light. “Melt” reminds me of this interesting fact. “Binchoutan Light” made me want to know the meaning of light and heat created by the Binchoutan coal. I really like the paradox presented by this work. It’s very scientifi c in its method of conducting the opposite of water electrolysis, but its power is supplied by Binchoutan coal.

Patrick Whitney
(Designer)
On the whole, this year’s awards went to easy to understand, simple works. There have been some pieces that were too complicated in the last competitions.
I personally believe that design should aim for clarity and simplicity, so I’m really happy about this.

Angelo Cortesi
(Industrial Designer)
They showed very good creativity and originality, as well as the skillful usage of LED, our new light source. They made me really happy. On the other hand, I also have an anxiety. I’m concerned that lighting will be turning into something unnoticeable, partly because of LED. I feel that the world is getting more and more bodiless and immaterial. I’m a little worried that we might be living in a time where lightings are reduced to mere small-sized lights like LED and everything else material about it is slowly disappearing.
It’s not that there will be absolutely no lighting. I’m concerned about its direction.
