全体の作品を見て、LEDやバッテリー、センサーなどのテクノロジーが発展したことによって、光に自由が与えられたと強く感じました。かつては「あかり」というものには、技術的な面での規制が多くありました。しかし、これからは作り手がイメージする照明を思い通りに作れる可能性が大きくなりました。それは素晴らしいことではありますが、一歩間違うと不遜を招く恐れもある。「あかりの自由性」については、私自身は、不安半分、期待半分といった印象です。

今回の審査会は非常にエキサイティングでした。新しい技術を取り入れることは、よいことですが、安全性を考えると心配な点も多くありました。しかし、応募作品が清新でこれまでとは異なる新しいステージに確実に進歩していると感じました。他の学生コンペとは一線を画する高度なコンペであると改めて感じます。作品がどんどんコンパクトになっているのも近年の傾向ですね。
★葉 祥栄

金賞の2点については、世界的にも見たことのない画期的な照明でした。こうした大胆で新鮮な作品に出会えたのは、やはり学生を対象にしているコンペだからだと思います。商業ベースでは決してこのような作品は出てこなかったでしょう。改めて、学生に発表の場を与えている意義、素晴らしさを感じました。
★パトリック・ホイットニー

私も金賞の2作品は突出していたと思います。どちらもスイッチという概念を大きく変えている点が興味深く、インタラクティブな特性が顕著にみられました。一方、他の作品については不満が残りました。デザインは複雑で凝っているけれども、よくない作品も多かった。これから応募する学生には、コンセプトをよく考え、シンプルに表現することを大切にしてもらいたいですね。

金賞2作品については、私も深い満足を感じています。これまでの金賞作品は、造形的な美しさやユニークさにおいて一定の評価をしてきましたが、今回の金賞作品には驚かされ、そして魅了されました。こんなことは初めてです。
私はミラノ工科大学で長い間教鞭をとっていますが、若い学生たちが新しいアイデアを次々に出してくるかというと、そういうわけでもありません。若いということと、斬新なアイデアが生まれるということは、別なのだと感じていました。しかし、今回の金賞は学生の作品でありながら、多様性、可変性があり、照明の将来を感じさせてくれました。私自身それがとても嬉しかったです。

Having looked at all the entries,I felt that the light could be handled and designed more freely owing to the development of technology such as LED, battery, and sensor. There used to be a lot of restrictions for a light on a technical aspect. But now,possibility is getting more and more expanded,for us to create the one as we wish. It is wonderful,of course,but we should be careful not to go too far off the road.Now I am expecting,and at the same time,worrying about the unrestricted creativity of the light design.

It has been exciting to be part of the Judges meeting this year. Although I found myself worried a lot about safety issues on the submissions, as I tend to think about safety in the first place, each idea is extremely fresh and I see that the competition positively advances forward onto a new step. It proves to be a highly advanced competition for students, when compared with others in the same category. In addition in recent years, there has been found a tendency that works are getting smaller and smaller.

I have never seen a light like the two Gold-awarded works in the world before. I suppose these fresh and challenging works owe very much to this competition targeting at young students. Any of these I guess, could not be created on a commercial-based field. I recognize again the meaning and the purpose of this competition to give young talents an opportunity to introduce their works.

I also think the two Gold awardees are outstanding from all other entries. They change the concept of the switch, and both have the nature of interactivity. On the other hand, I am not fully satisfied with the other entries. They are designed tactfully and in a complex way, but still, they do not impress me too much. I would like to say to future applicants that I want them to contemplate the concept, and let their creations be shown in a simple way.

I am deeply satisfied with the two works winning the Gold Award this year. Up until now, we have evaluated the beauty and the uniqueness of the light to select the Gold Award, but this year, the two works have just surprised and attracted me. This never happened to me before. I have been teaching at Politecnico di Milano for a long time, and from my experience,it is not always true that young students propose new ideas one after another. I have been thinking that youth and new ideas are not necessarily connected. And yet, though they were submitted by students, there are diversity and variability, and I can see the future of the light in the works of this year's Gold Award winners. That fact pleases me a lot.
