2012/25th Discussion Forum

Head Juror
Kenji Ekuan
(Industrial Designer)
Being a juror of this competition for the past 25 years, I found this year’s entries impressive and adequate for the final event. It was interesting to find a philosophical work like “Boundless” that presented concept of borderless light. It was even poetic. If you let me give you an example, the work reminded me of a waka (Japanese poetry) by Norinaga Moto-ori that goes, “Shikishima no yamato gokoro wo hito towaba, asahi ni niou yamazakurabana” whose meaning is “if I was asked what the Japanese soul is, I would answer that it is the wild cherry blossoms in morning sun”. His answer to the question is visually expressed and not by defining words. His waka makes the viewers feel or sense his ideas without saying it clearly, and I feel many of this year’s entries were the same.
What I found disappointing was that the actual techniques were a little ancient compared to the spirits behind them. We do have new technologies like LED, but using on-trend material may make it ordinary and boring. I think I could say that finding a way out of this would be one of the main issues that lie ahead.
My overall impression is that we have gradually moved away from the world of illumination. I think now we are at a stage where lighting is something that lights up the heart of viewers instead of space. This is a great progress.
I would like to hear what everyone thinks of this competition and its history as a whole.

I have been a juror since the 17th competition. There are many design competitions, but this must be one of the most long-lasting ones. It has been a very worthwhile project from the perspective of design education. Personally, I am impressed by the growth Chinese students showed in the last years.

Angelo Cortesi
(Industrial Designer)
This competition has reflected the drastic change in the lighting industry in the 20th and 21st centuries over 25 years, and in this sense, it represents the history of lighting. We saw a new trend in the use of LED in late entries. As Mr. Ekuan said, lighting is now used to illuminate or enlighten ourselves and not to illuminate the space around us. This was very interesting to me. The overall picture of lighting displayed by this competition will be a great gift to me and to the society.

Shoei Yoh
(Architect,Designer)
I think that it has also reflected the state of world economy. Korean manufacturers have been growing rapidly in recent years, and so have Korean students in this competition.
I have been a juror for 20 years since the 4th competition. Like Mr. Cortesi said, works submitted to this competition reflect the world so well. This year, we had many works that presented answers to the theme “The form of light” in a philosophical way. The theme asked the participants to think of the form of light, and many of them submitted an antithesis answer that “light is not form”. In this sense, this year summed up the long history of this competition and suggested the general direction of lighting in the future.
