世紀末を迎えた今、世の中は2つの暗さを抱えている。一つは、地震等で実際に光を失った時の暗さ、もう一つは、物質社会の心の暗さ。学生は、時代の大きな流れを上手く掴んでいる。まるで、リトマス試験紙のような存在だ。

これまで考えてきた光のオリジナリティやルーツといったもの、つまり我々審査員の共通分母を、今回の金賞作品は見せてくれた。初源的なひかりのあり方や人間との関係が、見事に表現されていた。
★菊竹 清訓
（建築家）
もっとワールドワイドな参加があってもいいと思う。
特にアジア諸国からの参加があれば、面白い案も期待できそうだ。ライティングをスペース、あるいは環境と結びつける考え方が、増えているようだ。
★葉 祥栄
（建築家・デザイナー）
今回は物凄くシンボリックな選択がなされたと思う。金賞と銀賞がペアであるというか・・・
金賞作品は文明批評のアイロニーであり、科学文明に対する警告だ。銀賞作品は逆に、人類とその命を救う、ハードな文明のあるべき形を示している。

全体として、アートの方向に流れているような感じた。
デザインには、純粋なアートとは異なった方法論があるべきだと考える。金賞作品は、アイディアに富み、インテリジェンスを含んだ非常に良いものだと思う。根源的で、文化レベルの高い作品だ。

神話と感情は、人間の生活で基本となることだと思います。ここに絶妙なバランスで、技術というものを結びつける。そうして初めて、それを使う人間に近い作品が生まれてくるのではないでしょうか。。

At the end of the century, I feel two kinds of darkness here. One is the darkness that occurs when human beings lose light due to earthquakes or fires. The other is darkness in the human heart in this materialistic world. The students seem to have sensed these types of danger quickly.

The Gold Award winner shows originality, or the roots of lighting. In other words, it achieved the common denominator which the jurors envisioned. The idea of how primitive lighting or the relations between lighting and human beings should be was skillfully incorporated.

I wish we have had more international participation this time. If we had entries from Asian nations, we could expect more interesting ideas. Another thing I found is that more people are likely to connect lighting with space or environments.
Shoei Yoh

This time we made an extremely symbolic selection. We should say that the gold and silver awards are a pair. The Gold Award winner is a criticism of civilization, on the one hand, and an irony and a warning against science and civilization. The Silver Award winner suggests how we can save the lives of confused human beings in a lightless world. At the same time, it suggests the different aspect of civilization.
Paolo Lomazzi

I found more artistic taste in the entries this time. As a designer, I believe that the methodologies employed in design and pure art should be completely different. The Gold Awards winner which gained unanious endorsement, is an excellent design showing abundant creativity and intellect. It is extremely original and of a high cultural level.

Myths and emotion constitute the basis for human activities. I think art which is close to human beings will be linked to technology well-balanced manner. I think it would be wonderful if we could incorporate emotional and mythical appeal in products, as well as in their functions and technologies, without depending on decorations.
