t is a great achievement that this competition by Koizumi Lighting Technology has lasted for more than 20 years. It is often said that it takes 25 years for a nation to prosper and perish, and it is no wonder this competition witnessed dramatic diculties in its nearly 30 years of history. I never thought it would last this long. I suppose it was the patience of Koizumi Lighting and the great ideas conceived by their sta involved that were appropriate for each occasion and time. The process from reviewing entries to selecting winners was very smooth. It was a delight to see jurors from Japan, Italy and the US work together in a cordial atmosphere and with mutual respect for each other. Each of them had their own unique opinion, as I expected, but it did not cause confusion at meetings. I think this was because we all had a vision of future lighting.

The basic concept of light is beautiful. Human beings cannot live without light. We are the ones who know this fact the best. Our mission was to make forms that are suitable for dierent purposes. The theme of the first competition,“ the way of light” was so full of hope and definitive that we ended up emphasizing it through rest of the competitions. I also liked the poster of the competition.“ The way of light” was not exactly a philosophical theme, but it was enough to urge competitors to seek the philosophy of light and also a higher form of art. This slogan not only helped the competitors, but also the jurors in a way that it created a continuous purpose for the remaining competitions, and helped us to make each year’s theme clearer than the previous one. I was also glad to find that social events for jurors arranged by Koizumi were of great benefit to the competition. We could exchange our thoughts and connect the world of light with other fields of art. In addition, the evolution of light source had a radical aect on the competition.

Light source evolved from sunlight. This reminds me of the myth of Amaterasu, the sun goddess. I think we could say that yearning for light is the biggest wisdom we human beings have ever had. Applicants prepared for the competition so well that we almost felt being tested by them. We are all part of nature and equal under the sun, but there is no limit to the technical development we can make. The technical level of entries for the final competition were clearly far better than those of the first. The world of lighting is ever-evolving.

Un affettuoso ultimo saluto all’amico Kiyonori Kikutake
